5 affordable ways to stay warm and save money

Replacing an old boiler with a new one or fitting new double glazing throughout your home is sure to save you money in the long run, but in the shorter term, here are some ideas for how you can stay warm and save money this winter.

Fit thermostatic valves on your radiators

Research by the University of Salford has shown that houses with thermostatic radiator controls can save up to 40% compared with not having them. These work by making sure you’re only heating the right rooms at the right times – and new smart valves can even be controlled by an app on your phone.

Block out drafts

Draught proofing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to save energy and money, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Correct ventilation is critical in any building to avoid condensation and damp, but uncontrolled ventilation (draughts) let in cold air and allow warm air to escape. The cold air needs to be heated all over again, using up more energy, only for it to escape again as soon as all that effort has been put into warming it.

So use brushes, foam strips, keyhole covers or even sausage dogs – and keep those chilly draughts at bay!

Install reflective radiator panels

Reflective radiator panels are inexpensive panels that fit behind your radiators, without the need to remove the radiator from the wall. They work by reflecting back the heat usually lost to the wall, and stimulating the distribution of warm air.

Check your furniture isn’t blocking radiators

Beds and sofas that are pushed right up against radiators can stop them working as efficiently, as they block the radiation of the heat. Move them six to twelve inches from the radiators to improve efficiency.

Take advantage of your curtains

Make sure you open curtains during the day to take advantage of the free heat provided by the sun. Then, when it gets dark, be sure to close them again, as curtains are a great form of insulation, keeping the warm air in.

Our Customers Say "Mick’s service was outstanding – he was here within an hour of me calling with the news our boiler had broken and had a new one installed within 24. The new boiler is clearly top quality, but the price was better than other quotes we’ve had in the past." - Kat, Leeds
